JAKARTA, June 8: Enjoy Jakarta will continue their exciting association with professional golf in the region by signing on as the Presenting Sponsor for the Indonesia Open, which makes its debut on the OneAsia schedule next month.
The Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta will be played at the Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course from July 1 to 4 and boast prize money of US$1 million.
The tournament also breaks new ground on OneAsia’s elite playing platform, which has more than doubled in size to 11 tournaments this year with a total of over US$12 million in prize money to be won.
It will be the fifth event on OneAsia’s schedule - which ultimately seeks to provide leading players in the Asia-Pacific region with an alternative to the PGA Tour and the European Tour.
“These are exciting times for golf in our region and so we at Enjoy Jakarta are thrilled to be continuing our relationship with Indonesia’s national Open. We first became involved with the tournament in 2005 with the plan to build a lasting bond with one of the country’s most high profile sporting events ,” said His Excellency Dr. Ing H. Fauzi Bowo, Governor of Jakarta.
Thai star Thongchai Jaidee had his name engraved on the trophy last season after a two-stroke victory at Bali’s New Kuta Golf & Ocean View Resort last year.
“We have witnessed some memorable finishes to the Indonesia Open over the past few seasons and through this we have been able to achieve outstanding coverage. We have no doubt that the exposure will be even greater this year as the tournament becomes part of OneAsia,” added Dr. Ing.
The Indonesia Open was first played in 1974 when the legendary Ben Arda of the Philippines won the title. Arda, the first Filipino to play in the Masters, was followed into the winner’s circle by several greats of the game including American Payne Stewart (1981) and Frank Nobilo from New Zealand (1994 and 1997)
“We are delighted that everything is now in place for this year’s Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta. We have a great sponsor and an outstanding venue plus a bright future now that we are part of OneAsia,” said Arifin Panigoro – President of the Indonesian Golf Association (PGI).
A strong field will compete this year reflecting the strength in depth of OneAsia which was founded last year by the China Golf Association, the PGA of Australia, the Korean Golf Association and the Korea Golf Tour.
“The Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta kicks off an exciting new chapter for OneAsia," said Sang Y Chun, OneAsia’s Chairman & Commissioner. "This partnership opens a new door to a very promising future in Southeast Asia and we are honoured to have the tournament on our schedule this year. We look forward to further growing the event with the Indonesian Golf Association and Enjoy Jakarta in 2011 and beyond."
The tournament will once again feature the Damai Indah Golf - Pantai Indah Kapuk Course, where Mikko Ilonen of Finland lifted the silverware the last time it was played on the exact venue in 2007.
Known as the “Spirit of the Sea”, the award-winning course - designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr - has challenged many of the world’s leading professionals during tour events while it gives enjoyment to players of all skill levels.
The course, which was opened in 1992 and is regarded as one of Trent Jones Jr’s foremost works, has built up a reputation as one of the best and most visually appealing layouts in Asia.
The Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta is jointly promoted by World Sport Group and Global One. Both will draw on their vast experience in sponsorship, media and event management to ensure this year’s tournament is one of the finest ever.
Full coverage of the Indonesia Open presented by Enjoy Jakarta will be showcased on OneAsia's television platform with live coverage for four hours a day across all four tournament days, and broadcast to over 260 million homes in more than 40 countries.
